Mada’s hop, skip and jump to glory

TEEN triple jump sensation Brian Mada is set to leap into the next chapter of his athletics’ journey after earning a scholarship to study Economics at DePaul University in the United States.

The four-year grant will see the Rusape-based youngster getting a chance to compete in the highly competitive National Collegiate Athletic Association Division One.

Mada, the national triple jump champion and one of the first Zimbabwean athletes to qualify for this year’s Africa Games, said his strong showing at the Region V Games last December triggered the US interest.

He achieved a personal best jump of 15,65m as he won the Region V gold medal.

“I feel great. This is an amazing lifetime opportunity that doesn’t come by chance, but only through the grace of God,” the 18-year-old said. “It’s a full scholarship; so, it covers basically everything from fees to housing, medical insurance and other stuff. It’s valid as long as I am at school. I’m not sure yet on when I am supposed to leave, but it should be in August.”
