FIVE people who died after a brutal attack from a suspected mentally challenged man in the Madlambudzi area last week will be laid to rest at their homesteads on Saturday.

A funeral service will be held this Friday at Madlambudzi Hall, Bulilima District, Matabeleland South province. Government is set to provide funeral assistance for the deceased.

The attack was carried out, according to police, by Phamani Sibanda (43) who reportedly went on a violent rampage, attacking seven people with a Mopani log, a blunt object, and a sharp object.

Bulilima legislator and ICT Deputy Minister Dingumuzi Phuti (standing in suit) addresses Madlambudzi traditional leadership, police, Zanu PF leadership and Madlambudzi murder victims families during a visit on Wednesday. Looking on is Chief Madlambudzi (seated and wearing stripped jersey).

Five victims succumbed to their injuries, while two others — aged 90 and 41 — were hospitalised. The 41-year-old victim has since been discharged, while the 90-year-old, identified as Gogo Mpopoma Ngwenya, is in a stable condition at Plumtree District Hospital. Gogo Ngwenya’s husband was one of the five victims who died in the attack.

Bulilima Constituency legislator Cde Dingumuzi Phuti who is also Deputy Minister of Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services, today met with the local traditional leadership led by Chief Madlambudzi, Madlambudzi police and affected families on planning the funeral arrangements.

A proposal was made to design a shrine where the victims will all be buried, but according to family traditions, families opted to bury the deceased at their various homesteads.
