Magwaza wins Matabeleland Open

Magwaza recently emerged as the top dog at the Matabeleland Open tournament after beating Malvin Mubure, also from Harare, 3-1 in the final at Bulawayo’s Suburbs Squash Club.

To reach the final, Harare Sports Club’s Magwaza, who had a first round bye, first beat Bulawayo’s Kapil Kika 3-0 in the quarter-finals before accounting for another Bulawayo-based player Beven Waghon 3-0 in the last four. Belgravia Sports Club’s Mubure, on the other hand, beat Bulawayo’s Shahil Patel 3-0 in the quarter-finals and then stopped Langton Gwidziwa of Bulawayo 3-1 in the semis before he met his match in Magwaza in the final.

Gwidzima settled for third place at this tournament after he beat Waghon in the third and fourth-place play-off.
Meanwhile, it was a Williams’ affair in the women’s final where Lauren Williams upset her elder sister Michelle 3-1 to walk away with the title. In the third and fourth-place play-off, Gugu Mkwananzi beat Chantel Edwards 3-0 to settle for the bronze medal.
