KUDAKWASHE Mahachi and Knox Mutizwa were again influential as Golden Arrows shot down Platinum Stars at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Wednesday night to shoot to the top of the Absa Premiership standings.

The two former Highlanders players were in a class of their own on Sunday when they each scored in their side’s 4-1 demolition of AmaZulu. On Wednesday night, it was Mahachi’s added time spot kick that condemned Platinum Stars.

Returning to the stadium that saw him torment defenders during the 2017 edition of the Cosafa Castle Cup in July, Mutizwa was fouled by Ryan de Jongh inside the box and Mahachi took responsibility and buried the spot kick home to secure maximum points for his side. Golden Arrows took their points tally to 11 and go into this weekend’s blockbuster encounter against Kaizer Chiefs oozing with confidence.

Mahachi’s goal took his tally to three this season and is among the early leaders on the goal scorers’ chart.

The Soweto giants themselves are on cloud nine after a 2-0 win over Evans Rusike’s Maritzburg United on a night which Willard Katsande was also in a class of his own in the heart of the midfield.

Former Tsholotsho and Chicken Inn winger Edmore Chirambadare was on the bench for Amakhosi. Rusike had a late goal ruled out and he also missed a penalty, as his side lost despite dominating the Soweto giants.

Smarting from their defeat to Golden Arrows, AmaZulu, home to former Tsholotsho midfielder Butholezwe Ncube, who started the match, pummelled out of sorts champions Bidvets Wits 3-0, while Ronald Pfumbidzai’s Bloemfontein Celtics were beaten 0-2 by Talent Chawapihwa’s Baroka FC.

The former FC Platinum lively winger was, however, not part of the proceedings for his new paymasters, who have had a fairytale start to the season, finding themselves sitting in second position with 11 points. — @skhumoyo2000
