POPULAR gospel musician Minister Michael Mahendere is dreaming big.
He intends to change the fortunes of both budding and established musicians by establishing a world-class recording studio and gospel radio station this year.
He has already secured locations for both and will soon embark on a fundraising campaign dubbed “Building a Heritage of Excellence”.
Minister Mahendere will be working with Urbane Create.
Last week, the “Ndinobuda Pakaoma” hitmaker – who was born on May 28, 1983 – said he wanted to celebrate his 40th birthday in style.
“The establishment of a recording studio at Michael House in the heart of Harare and radio station will inspire up-and-coming local, regional and international artistes to strive for higher and original forms of artistic achievement and excellence through quality recordings and broadcasting,” he said.
The musician said he was inspired by the success story of the late music icon, Dr Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi, through his Pakare Paye Arts Centre in Norton.
“The Direct Worship live equipment – which covers stage equipment, sound system and LED (light-emitting diode) screens – shall enhance local events to world-class status. We will also hire out the equipment to generate revenue to fund recording of budding artistes,” he added.
“In the next three months, my fans and friends in Zimbabwe, South Africa, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia and the world over will have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to participate in an impactful celebration fundraising campaign.”
He, however, bemoaned poor airplay on radio stations.
“Gospel music helps people in their day-to-day living but it is not getting favourable airplay. Most gospel music shows are only reserved for Sunday. This is why I want to open a gospel radio station.
“I remember speaking to this other man and he told me, ‘man of God, I know I don’t pray as much as you all people do, but the first thing that I do in the morning is playing your music and that is sort of praying for me.’”
Gospel music, he added, was not just for Christians.
Meanwhile, the singer revealed that he would soon be releasing new music featuring his wife Vimbai, who is the co-manager of his band – Direct Worship.
The couple has in the past dropped “Zvichanaka” and “Masimba”, off the album “Getting Personal with God 2”.
“We are doing a few projects and when the music is ready, we are going to release it,” he said.
