A maid aged 59 and her accomplice who is a gardener were dragged to court over the weekend after they allegedly stole over US$80 000 from their employer.
Milton Mudimu, 24, and Sarah Matemarunda were not asked to plead when they appeared before Harare magistrate Tapiwa Kuhudzai charged with theft.
They are expected back in court today for bail considerations.
Allegations are that the duo’s employer Gift Mzilikazi, who resides in Borrowdale, left home going to his farm around midday.
The next day, Matemarunda informed her employer that Mudimu was nowhere to be found and had not notified her of his destination.
Mzilikazi tried to call the gardener to understand what was happening on the ground, but he did not pick up the calls.
Mzilikazi returned the next day and upon arrival he was surprised to observe that his bedroom door was open even though he had locked it before he left for the farm.
Upon entry he discovered that his digital safe which was mounted on the walls had been forcibly removed and all the property inside had been stolen.
The stolen property was US$80 400, live rounds, R4 000, 300 Yuan, 200 Dirhams, 100 Rupees and £30.
Mzilikazi then informed the police and upon arrival at home, he discovered that the digital safe was left inside his son’s car boot and this led to the recovery of the live rounds of ammunition and Zimbabwean Passports.
The maid was then interviewed and led to the recovery of US$12 391-00, R1 360-00,
£10, 50 Rupees, 5 Dirhams and 100 Yuan which she had hidden inside her monarch.
Matemarunda then implicated, Mudimu who was apprehended in South Africa after he illegally entered into that country in a bid to evade the arrest.
Mudimu, in turn, also implicated Matemarunda and Mzilikazi’s relatives who reside near the border accusing them of assisting him.
