THE Bulawayo Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund received a major boost from retail giant TM Pick n Pay Group of Supermarkets which donated groceries worth over ZW$90 000 on Thursday.

The Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund is meant to raise cash and other donations to cheer the under-privileged during the festive season.

The Thursday donation was received by the city’s deputy mayor councillor Mlandu Ncube who was representing the mayor, Councillor Solomon Mguni who is the patron of the Christmas Cheer Fund.

Last month the fund handed over donations to various homes in the city which are taking care of vulnerable members of the community.

TM Pick n Pay representative Ms Andile Ndlovu said the group wanted to reach out to the underprivileged members of the community through the Christmas Cheer Fund.

“With this donation, we would like to appreciate the efforts of Bulawayo City Council to assist the underprivileged people in the community. We are not donating to BCC but to the underprivileged community that we also serve as TM Pick n Pay. We will surely continue to help in whatever way we can,” said Ms Ndlovu.

The donation included flour, cooking oil, mealie meal, soaps, sugar, rice, sugar beans, powdered milk, salt and tea bags of various quantities.

Clr Ncube hailed the supermarkets chain for its generous donation adding that the supermarkets chain was also playing a critical role in employment creation in the city.

“It’s special to have one of the biggest supermarkets in the city of Bulawayo donating to the fund.

“This is not the first time this company is donating to us, we hope they will continue doing so. The supermarkets chain should continue to open more branches so that it creates more jobs for our people,” he said.

Several companies and organisations including TelOne, PPC, OKMart, Delta Beverages, Lupane State University, Metro Peech, Winston Precast, Joyous Events and Datlabs have donated to the Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund this year.
