OVER one million women farmers have received training under the Government Climate Proofed Presidential Inputs programme, also known as Pfumvudza/Intwasa, as response to the programme continues growing overwhelmingly.
With over half of those benefitting being women, this is set to boost family income and improve livelihoods as Government moves to achieve Vision 2030 goals as espoused in the National Development Strategy (NDS) 1.
Pfumvudza has proved to be a viable option to women smallholder farmers as many do not have draught power and cannot afford irrigation equipment, thereby allowing them to make planting stations (holes) and gather mulch for moisture conversation under this farming method.
The concept promotes climate proofing agriculture by adopting conservation farming techniques that require the use of small plots and applying the correct agronomic practices for high yields and better returns.
According to the update by the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development on the preparations of the summer cropping season now underway, more than 1,9 million farmers have so far been trained under Pfumvudza.
Of those 1,9 trained farmers, 1 050 479 are women while 864 187 are men.
Women are also outnumbering men under the Cotton Presidential Inputs Scheme, with 141 654 women and 128 668 men having been trained.
