ZIMBABWE international chess master, Rodwell Makoto, is set to leave the country today, for Russia, for the FIDE World Chess tournament. The tournament will see athletes arriving in Russia, from tomorrow, for an official opening ceremony on Sunday.
The tourney gets underway on Monday.
Makoto, who is set to be the second Zimbabwean, to represent the country at the prestigious tourney, after Robert Gwaze, said he feels he will do well.
‘My career is taking shape and I also thank the Collen Tongoona-led executive for giving us an opportunity to pay at the highest level.
”The sport has changed very much and I am encouraged by the way it is now getting recognition, unlike in the past, when it was regarded as a hobby,” said Makoto.
The battles, for Round One, will start on July 12. The next day game two of round one will be played, while the tie-breaks will be played on the 14th, if there is a tie, between the players.
The players should win 1.5-0.5 points or two–zero to win the tie.
If there is no winner, there will be a tie-break, on July 14. Two hundred and six players will battle it out, in the Open section, where Makoto and Vladislav Kovalev, will be playing.
