The newly rehabilitated Mama Mafuyana Drive – formerly Lorraine Drive, is set to open to traffic on March 9, 2026, marking another milestone in Harare’s ongoing road modernisation programme.
The near-completion of works on the key thoroughfare comes as authorities intensify assessments of other roads across the capital requiring urgent rehabilitation.
The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development confirmed that local contractor, Fossil Contracting, is finalising works on the road, with an official opening scheduled for 10 am at Westgate Traffic Circle.
“Join us for the official opening to traffic of the rehabilitated Lorraine Drive on March 9, 2026, at 10:00 hours at Westgate Traffic Circle,” the ministry said.
“As we progress with infrastructure development, we remain committed to delivering quality roads that improve mobility, enhance safety, and drive economic growth — kilometre by kilometre.”
The upgrading of Mama Mafuyana Drive forms part of broader infrastructure improvements underway in Harare.
Construction of the Willowvale Road traffic circle – designed to ease congestion at the intersection of Willowvale Road and Harare Drive – is still in progress.
However, the entire Harare Drive stretch between Willowvale Road and Simon Mazorodze Road has already been opened to traffic.
In 2024, Transport Minister Felix Mhona, commissioned the completed Harare Drive Missing Link Road and the Mukuvisi River Bridge, both integral components of the Trabablas Interchange project.
The 800-metre road and bridge link Simon Mazorodze Road to Masotsha Ndlovu Way, forming part of Harare Drive and enhancing connectivity between the eastern and western parts of the city.
