A 29-year-old man from Mkoba Village 9 in Gweru broke into his neighbour’s house who is a money changer and stole more than US$3 000 cash and bought furniture.
Khulumani Moyo has appeared before Gweru Magistrate Mildred Matuvi charged with unlawful entry and theft, after he stole money from his neighbour Regina Shopera.
Moyo pleaded guilty to the charges laid against him.
Matuvi sentenced Moyo to 48 months in prison, and 10 months were suspended on condition that Moyo restitutes Shopera all the money by September 30.
For the State, Gracious Rongai told the court that on August 12, and at around 3am, Moyo went to Shopera’s house.
He opened the bedroom window and used a stick to fish out Shopera’s maroon handbag.
The handbag contained two cellphones, US$3 000, 430 pounds, 10 Australian dollars, $120 and R50.
At round 6am, Shopera’s maid, Blatina Maseko, discovered Shopera’s handbag outside the house and she quickly advised her employer.
Upon taking the handbag, Shopera discovered that all her belongings were missing which prompted her to report the matter at ZRP Mkoba.
On August 20, police got a tip-off from members of the public that Moyo was at Mkoba 6 Shopping Centre, and that he was in possession of different currencies ranging from United States dollars to pounds. He was arrested and only US$1 200, $123 and R30 was recovered.
Upon questioning Moyo revealed that he had used the rest of the money to buy a refrigerator, Plasma TV, home theatre, television stand, and a white two plate stove.
