Man (44), niece (18) live as husband and wife. . . Arrested after woman falls pregnant

A 44-YEAR-OLD man from Gokwe and his 18-year-old niece were recently convicted of having an incestuous relationship which resulted in the niece falling pregnant.

Loveledge Chuma and his niece Progress Sibanda, both of Time Village under Chief Nemangwe in Gokwe South have been in a relationship since last year in June staying as husband and wife.

The two appeared before Gokwe magistrate Christopher Maturure charged with having sexual intercourse within a prohibited degree of relationships and both pleaded guilty.

Magistrate Maturure sentenced Chuma to 30 months imprisonment of which six months were suspended for five years on condition that he does not commit any sexual offence within that period.

Sibanda was sentenced to six months imprisonment wholly suspended for five years on condition that she does not commit any sexual offence within that period.

Circumstances surrounding the matter are that during the month of June last year, the accused persons were staying together at the same house when Chuma proposed love to Sibanda and she agreed.

The two accused persons had sexual intercourse several times until Sibanda fell pregnant.

The matter came to light when Rebecca Chuma discovered that her daughter was pregnant. Upon interrogating her, Sibanda disclosed that her uncle was responsible for the pregnancy.

The matter was initially reported to Chief Nemangwe who ordered Chuma to pay two beasts, one for cleansing the area and another for his sister.

The case was then reported to the police leading to the arrest of the two accused persons.
