Man arrested for beating niece to death over $10 bill

Police have arrested a 40-year-old man, Tauya Mungate for allegedly beating his 13-year-old niece to death in Mungate Village, Chinhamora.

The shocking event reportedly stemmed from an accusation that the young girl had stolen a $10 bill.

According to official statements, Tauya Mungate allegedly subjected his niece to a brutal assault, using various objects as weapons. Among the items reportedly used were a switch, a wooden broom, and a fan belt, which inflicted severe injuries on the young girl.

The assault occurred on November 4, with police announcing that Mungate had been taken into custody shortly afterwards.

Police shared an update on the case via social media platform X, detailing the charges against him.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) released a statement, confirming that the suspect had been arrested in connection with the alleged murder. The statement read: “The suspect assaulted his niece (13) to death with a switch, wooden broom, and fan belt after accusing her of stealing US$10.”

Authorities are investigating the incident further to gather more details about the circumstances leading up to the assault. No further information has been released regarding the suspect’s defence or any potential witnesses.
