A 30-YEAR-OLD man from Buhera has been arrested for allegedly killing his 10-year-old brother while the minor slept, in a shocking incident that has left the Mukanwa Village community reeling.
The suspect, Evans Munyadzi, is accused of murdering his juvenile brother, Tapiwa Munyadzi, at their family home in Mukanwa Village under Chief Nyashanu, Buhera, on January 31.
Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, confirmed the incident and said police were treating the matter as murder as defined in Section 47 of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act (Chapter 9:23).
“Police are investigating a case of murder in which a 30-year-old man allegedly killed his 10-year-old biological brother while he was asleep.
‘‘The suspect has since been arrested and is in custody,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.
According to police, the deceased was a Grade Five pupil at Chimombe Primary School in Mutiusinazita, Buhera. He stayed with his mother, Ms Virginia Thandi (50), and his elder brother.
On the night of January 30, at around 9pm, the siblings retired to bed together in the same room. Nothing unusual was reported during the night.
The following morning, at around 5am, the boys’ mother woke up and went to the garden, leaving the two siblings asleep. A few minutes later, Evans followed her to the garden.
“Upon seeing him, the mother instructed Evans to return home and wake up the minor so that he could join them in the garden,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.
Evans went back to the homestead but soon returned, telling his mother that the child was not responding.
Concerned, the two rushed back home.
“They found the minor lying lifeless on the floor, covered with a blanket. The mother noticed visible bruises on the neck and froth around the mouth and nose,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.
A report was immediately made at ZRP Mutiusinazita Base. Officers from CID Buhera and ZRP Muzokomba attended the scene.
Police observations indicated that the body was lying on its back and had bruises on the neck consistent with strangulation. A dry white substance, suspected to be froth, was observed around the mouth and nose.
The body was conveyed to Murambinda Mission Hospital where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.
Evans was arrested at the scene and investigations are ongoing, with police seeking to establish the motive behind the killing.
Asst Insp Chinyoka warned members of the public against violence within families, urging people to seek help when facing challenges.
