Man asks police to jail him

For some people, going to prison can feel like escaping to freedom.

A man under house arrest in Italy showed up at a police barracks asking to be put behind bars because life with his wife at home was unbearable, police said last Sunday.

The 30-year-old Albanian citizen living in Guidonia Montecelio, outside Rome, “was no longer able to cope with the forced cohabitation with his wife,” Carabinieri police from nearby Tivoli said in a statement.

“Exasperated by the situation, he preferred to escape, spontaneously presenting himself to the Carabinieri to ask to serve his sentence behind bars,” they wrote.

The man had been under house arrest for drug crimes for several months and had a few years left to serve, Captain Francesco Giacomo Ferrante of the Tivoli Carabinieri told AFP.

“He lived at home with his wife and family. It wasn’t going well anymore,” Ferrante said.

He said, “Listen, my domestic life has become hell, I can’t do it anymore, I want to go to jail.”

The man was promptly arrested for violating his house arrest and judicial authorities ordered his transfer to prison.

164 dogs crammed

into a tiny house

Japanese health officials found 164 emaciated dogs crammed into a tiny house in one of the country’s worst cases of animal hoarding, an animal rights activist said.

The parasite-infested animals were found in a 30 square-metre house in the city of Izumo in western Japan after neighbours had complained, said Kunihisa Sagami, the head of animal rights group Dobutsukikin.

The dogs lived crammed onto shelves and under tables and chairs.

“The entire floor was filled with dogs and all the floor space you could see was covered with faeces,” said Sagami.

Public health officials first visited the house seven years ago after getting complaints from neighbours about the noise and bad smell, but the owner refused to let officials investigate at that time.

The three people living in the house said they could not afford to spay and neuter the dogs, so they kept getting more of them.

Sagami said the family has agreed to give up the dogs and his group would look for foster homes for them after they got medical care.

“The suspects had removed the feathers from the bird which they intended selling separately.

“They (suspects) informed reaction officers that the proceeds of the sale were to be used to purchase heroin,” said the statement.

Peacocks have been kept as pets for thousands of years and regarded as a status symbol by the rich and famous.

They are known for their colourful iridescent plumage and wide tail, which when fanned out, make up more than 60 percent of the bird’s body and which have colourful “eye markings”.

The tails are used in mating or courtship rituals and it is believed females choose their mate based on the size, colour and quality of the tail “train”.

Technically, males are peacocks, the females are peahens and together they are known as peafowl.

Their lifespan is about 20 years and the male tail can grow up to 1,5 metres. — Wires.
