A 43-YEAR-OLD man from Inyathi in Matabeleland North province was arrested for allegedly attempting to kill his lover’s husband after being confronted about their affair.
Livius Mayisa appeared before Bulawayo regional magistrate Joseph Mabeza facing attempted murder charges.
He pleaded not guilty to the alleged offense and the matter was remanded to 23 December 2024 for continuation of trial.
In his defense, Mayisa said he was busy at work on the day the complainant Sifiso Nkala is alleged to have been attacked.
He said the complainant was calling him consistently on his phone, threatening to kill him.
“He called me on 27 April saying he was given my number by his wife. He said I should assist him with medical bills since I attacked him, but I refused and told him we should go to the police station,” he said.
Meanwhile, the complainant alleged that when he got home, he was told his wife was at Mayisa’s homestead and went there in the company of Gilbert Dlodlo.
Nkala said after they got to Mayisa’s homestead, they inquired about his wife’s whereabouts from Mayisa who told them that she was not there and they left peacefully.
He said when they reached Tekwe Dam in Fort Rixon, Mayisa attacked him while Dlodlo fled the scene.
“He struck me with an axe on my forehead, mouth, and on the back of my head. While he attacked me, he said to me that my wife is also his wife. I fell down and woke up the following morning lying on the same spot,” Nkala said.
He further said the accused actually called and apologised but he was not able to forgive him in such a case.
“I’m no longer able to use my left side due to the attack. I want to be compensated for my medical expenses. I used US$107 to cover my hospital bills,” he said.
Circumstances are that Nkala heard that there was a love affair between the accused and his wife.
He went to Mayisa’s homestead with the hope of finding his wife there but did not find her. Mayisa is alleged to have followed and hidden ahead of Nkala in order to beat him up.
On 3 April, 2024, at around 6pm at Tekwe Dam, Fort Rixon, Mayisa attempted to kill Nkala by striking him once on the forehead, mouth with an axe, and once on the back of the head with an axe.
The court heard that Mayisa fled the scene leaving Nkala lying down unconsciously.
Nkala is said to have lost three teeth in the process. The matter was reported to the police, leading to the arrest of Mayisa.
