A VILLAGER from Chief Mutasa died when he inhaled a poisonous chemical and slept in the same room with the maize he had treated last Thursday.
Johannes Mutamba (36) and his wife, Josephine Nyanhowa (23) administered Aluminum Phosphate Fungicide to kill weevils in their grain when they later slept in the same room.
Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Enock Chishiri, confirmed the death of Nyanhowa.
“The couple wanted to treat their maize of weevils and they used a poisonous chemical. They slept in the same room with the treated maize and they both inhaled the chemical.
“The following morning, Nyanhowa asked for help from their neighbours as her husband was having difficulties in breathing. They were both rushed to Nyarowa Clinic
“Mutamba was, however, seriously affected by the substance and died upon admission. His body was taken to Regina Coeli Mission Hospital for post-mortem. Nyanhowa was discharged the following day. We urge people to be careful when dealing with poisonous substances. They should read the instructions carefully and follow them with caution to avoid unnecessary loss of life,” said Insp Chishiri.
