IN a tragic incident, Trymore Samupindi (32) from Village 17 Mahara under Chief Marange in Odzi, died when he slipped into a mining shaft at Day Dawn Mine.
The incident occurred on May 4, 2025.
Manicaland police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka said the accident happened when Samupindi joined his friends Tizai Kurunda (24) and Peter Chinhuwa (28) at the mine shaft from a drinking session at Odzi Business Centre.
“It is alleged that Samupindi had been drinking at Odzi Business Centre with his friends Tizai Kurunda and Peter Chinhuwa earlier that day.
They later slept about 6 metres away from the 100-metre-deep mine shaft at a fireplace. Kurunda and Chinhuwa woke up around 21am and went into the mine to start working. Samupindi woke up later, saw them working, and he decided to join them. Unfortunately, he slipped and fell, landing on his head,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.
Kurunda and Chinhuwa attempted to render first aid, but to no avail as Samupindi lost his life due to severe head injuries.
Mine owner, Mr Paul Mhandu (29) was informed and reported the incident to the police at Odzi, who attended the scene.
Multiple head injuries were observed on his body.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
