A SECURITY guard, Lovemore Matsanura (53) has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of an unknown man at Eastern Highlands Tea Plantation Estate in Honde Valley.
The incident occurred on May 4, 2025 around 8:30pm.
Manicaland police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka said the incident occurred when a team of security guards, including Yadlin Muchangweya (25) and Moses Waramba (47), were deployed to apprehend individuals who had hidden 90kg of organic matter in a tea field.
It is alleged that on the morning of the incident, around 9:3am, Lovemore Matsanura discovered the hidden sacks of manure, and in response, six security guards, were deployed in an ambush-style operation to apprehend the individuals responsible.
“Around 8:30pm, the individual who had hidden the sacks returned with friends to collect them. They were confronted by Waramba, but charged towards him with machetes. Waramba fired a warning shot in the air, causing them to flee. Muchangweya then fired another shot into the sky,” he said.
During the ensuing chaos, Mandiwa chased after the now-deceased individual and his friends. The deceased fell to the ground, revealing a gunshot wound.
The police were promptly informed, and officers from ZRP Ruda attended the scene.
“Upon arrival, the police found the deceased with a gunshot wound just above the waist. The two firearms involved were seized for ballistics analysis,” he said.
Muchangweya and Waramba were arrested and are cooperating with police investigations.
The deceased’s body was taken to Hauna District Hospital for a post-mortem.
Assistant Inspector Chinyoka urged security personnel to exercise restraint, and stop being trigger-happy.
The police are working to identify the deceased and determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
