Man escapes jail term for failing to pay maintenance

A Gweru man escaped jail after his three-month jail term for failing to pay maintenance was wholly suspended for 5 years.

Jonathan Machingauta (22) appeared before the Gweru Magistrates’ Court.

On September 2, 2024, Machingauta was ordered by the court to make monthly payments of US$80 as maintenance for his two minor children.

However, he failed to comply with the court order and did not pay maintenance for September and October 2024, bringing the total arrears to US$160.
