Most of the time men suffer in silence when they are subjected to abuse but Elson Manzini from Sihlengeni on the outskirts of Bulawayo applied for a court protection order to stop his estranged wife from bashing and threatening to kill him.
Manzini claimed his estranged wife Thembelihle Moyo threatened to kill him by setting alight their bedroom hut while he was asleep inside.
He said after that he deserted his home in fear of being burnt to death.
Manzini told the court that Moyo was bothersome as she always confronted him at his workplace and bashed him threatening to end his life.
“Your worship I have suffered enough at the hands of this woman. I’m a taxi driver. She comes to my workplace and starts to accuse me of neglecting our children and would bash me and hurl insults at me while other people are watching,” he said.
He added: “While I was not at home she took all the property and left the house empty. But now she wants to come back. A few weeks ago I caught her in bed with a man at her family home?”
Moyo admitted that she issued death threats: “I was angry because he does not want to give me money for the upkeep of our children.”
In addition, Moyo said she wanted to return to her matrimonial home in Sihlengeni.
“I built that homestead as such I want to return to my home,” she said.
In response, Manzini said: “I want to engage my in-laws first before she comes. And I’m afraid she would kill me.”
The presiding magistrate, Challenge Mahembe, granted Manzini the protection order. Moyo was ordered not to physically and verbally abuse the applicant. She was also prevented from issuing death threats to her husband. The order is valid for five years.
