A man has been sentenced to 10 years in jail by a Gweru magistrate after being convicted of vandalism and theft of National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) underground signal copper cables.
In a statement, NRZ said the man, Owen Muchada was spotted by security personnel in April digging up the cables with an accomplice.
“His accomplice was arrested on the spot while Muchada fled. He was arrested following investigations leading to his subsequent court appearance. The cables were worth US$529,” read the statement.
The NRZ warned against tampering with its infrastructure as this attracts lengthy mandatory jail terms.
