A man who witnessed his friend fighting with another man allegedly shocked onlookers by grabbing the latter by the neck, wrestling him to the ground, and then stabbing him multiple times, resulting in his death.
Joel Chabaya (20) from Bulawayo’s Cowdray Park suburb arrived at his neighbour’s house and found his friend, Raymond Mangena, engaged in a fight with Michael Dube over paint.
A neighbourhood watch committee member, Simon Moyo, stated that Joel drew a knife from his trouser’s pocket and allegedly stabbed Dube repeatedly in the back, causing him to scream.
Dube collapsed to the ground, bled profusely and died, according to a source.
A resident, Fidel Kahilu, hearing the screams, rushed to the scene to intervene in the fight, but the situation escalated. Moyo said, “Joel then turned on Fidel and stabbed him once.”
Joel and his accomplice checked on Dube and found that he had died.
They subsequently fled and went into hiding. The incident was reported to the police, who searched the suburb and apprehended them at their hideout.
Bulawayo acting Police Spokesperson, Assistant Inspector, Nomalanga Msebele confirmed the incident.
“I confirm that we have arrested two men, Joel Chabaya and his accomplice Raymond Mangena, who are accused of murdering Michael Dube.”
She urged community members to refrain from resorting to violence when resolving disputes.
“We would like to urge community members to seek assistance from the police, pastors, or elders to help resolve their disputes, rather than resorting to violence,” she said.
Joel and his accomplice are scheduled to appear before Western Commonage regional magistrate Sibongile Msipa-Marondedze, facing murder charges.
