A 20-year-old man from Highfield, accused of raping his teenage ex-girlfriend, has been granted bail by the High Court.

Manatsa Zhuga was granted $50 000 bail by Harare High Court judge, Justice Never Katiyo, who ordered him to reside with his father until the matter was finalised.

The court heard that on April 14 last year, the girl was walking home from her sister’s place and passed through Solo’s place, where Zhuga was playing snooker.

He allegedly asked her to accompany him to his place, but she refused.

It was alleged that Zhuga and the girl sat on a sewer tank near St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church.

Zhuga asked to have sex with the girl and she refused.

It was alleged he then raped her and threatened to stab her to death if she revealed the matter to anyone.

He then escorted her home.

The court heard that the matter only came to light on April 7 this year when the girl did not sleep at home and her aunt cornered her into revealing the truth.

Through his lawyer, Zhuga denied all allegations and claimed he was in a consensual relationship with the girl.

He also accused the girl’s family of trying to frame him because he did not want to marry her.

He told the court that the girl had realised that Zhuga had other girlfriends and a misunderstanding arose between them.
