Man headbutts wife over sex embargo

A VICTORIA Falls man who headbutted his wife causing a deep cut above her right eye after she complained about pain during sex yesterday told the court that their differences emanate from her decision to impose a one-month sex embargo. John Kapofu, 46, of Chinotimba Township appeared before magistrate Sharon Rosemani facing physical abuse charges after his wife Sithembile Ndlovu, 34, a general hand at Baobab Primary School in the resort town, reported him to the police for bashing her.

Kapofu pleaded guilty and told the magistrate he got angry after Ndlovu denied him conjugal rights for more than a month. “I admit that I hit her but she makes me angry because she doesn’t want us to have sex. Sometimes we go for more than a month without sex,” said Kapofu.

Magistrate Rosemani fined him $100 and warned that he would be jailed for 10 weeks if he failed to pay the fine by tomorrow.

Ndlovu, who appeared in court with a deep cut above her right eye, claimed her husband assaulted her after she asked him why she always felt some pain during sex.

“I just wanted to know why I always feel pain after sex. My husband said it was because I was taking ARVs. He beat me up and left for church,” she said.

Prosecuting, Takunda Ndovorwi told the court that on Saturday at 6AM, the couple was in the bedroom when the woman quizzed her hubby.

“The complainant asked the accused to tell her why every time they had sex she feels some pain afterwards. This didn’t go down well with the accused who then got angry and headbutted her on the eye,” said Ndovorwi.

A report was made to the police leading to Kapofu’s arrest.

Ndlovu attempted to withdraw the matter from the court but the magistrate said the matter should proceed saying incidents of women who report domestic violence cases and then go on to withdraw charges on grounds that they would have resolved the issues were on the rise.

Rosemani said such withdrawal affidavits would only be used as mitigatory factors.
