A 33-YEAR-OLD man from Harare has appeared in court facing charges of murder and attempted murder after allegedly setting his ex-wife and her male companion on fire in a petrol attack.

Tapiwa Golden Makore was brought before the Harare Magistrates Court over the weekend, where he was remanded in custody until May 15 pending indictment.

Magistrate Mr Artwell Sanyatwe advised him to apply for bail at the High Court.

Prosecutor Ms Polite Chikiwa told the court that on January 27, 2026, the now deceased visited Makore’s residence in Mabvuku to collect her belongings.

She was accompanied by a male friend, Sympson Mutero.

Upon arrival, the pair reportedly entered a cabin at the premises where Makore was asleep.

It is alleged that Makore woke up and confronted Mutero, accusing him of having an affair with his ex-wife.

The court heard that Makore then allegedly splashed petrol on Mutero and threw a lit match, igniting a fire.

The flames were quickly extinguished, after which Makore is said to have turned on his ex-wife, dousing her with petrol and setting her alight using a cigarette lighter.

Mutero managed to escape from the scene, with Makore reportedly giving chase, leaving the woman engulfed in flames.

The injured woman was assisted by a witness who took her to ZRP Mabvuku Police Station, where a report was made.

She was subsequently referred to Parirenyatwa Hospital for treatment.

She succumbed to her injuries the following day at around 9 pm.
