A 23-year-old Harare man appeared in court on Saturday facing a murder charge after allegedly assaulting a man he accused of robbery, resulting in injuries that later led to the complainant’s death.

Wellington Mupasu appeared before Harare provincial magistrate Ruth Moyo, charged with murder. He was remanded in custody and advised to apply for bail at the High Court. The matter was postponed to May 22.

Prosecutor Bonface Musvaire alleged that on May 5, 2026, at around 3:30 am, Mupasu and an alleged accomplice, Ian Mutimbanyoka, who is still at large, confronted the now deceased at Muzinda Business Centre, accusing him of robbery.

The court heard that the pair allegedly apprehended the now deceased and force-marched him to a nearby water point, where they allegedly stripped him of his blue work suit before tying his hands and legs in a manner that suspended his body in the air.

It is alleged that while the now deceased was suspended, Mupasu and Mutimbanyoka assaulted him with stones and sticks all over the body.

According to the State, after realising that the now deceased had become unconscious, the accused persons allegedly took him to Hatcliffe Police Post where they filed a robbery report against him under ZRP Borrowdale CR49/05/26.

The now deceased was subsequently referred to Parirenyatwa Hospital for treatment before being discharged into police custody.

The court heard that on May 7, 2026, the now deceased died while in police custody.
