A 37-year-old man from Chipinge will spend the next decade in prison after he attempted to kill his sister following a heated argument.
Kufakwevantu Chirigo was sentenced to 10 years at the Chipinge Magistrates’ Court for attempted murder.
The court heard that Chirigo who was intoxicated, had a domestic dispute with his sister and during the altercation, he called her names and insisted that she returns to her marital home with her children.
Chirigo assaulted his sister with a spanner numerous times on her hands. The sister ran and locked herself in one of the huts.
Chirigo broke the window and tried to get into the hut and she unlocked the door and ran to her brother’s house about 50 metres away.
He caught up with her and struck her with a machete once on the neck. Chirigo also struck an 18-month-old baby that was strapped to her back with a machete killing her instantly.
He continued to strike her all over indiscriminately but she blocked the machete blows and sustained cuts on her wrists.
He was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for the attempted murder.
Chirigo is yet to be tried for the murder of the infant in the High Court.
