The Zimbabwe Cake Expo, a flagship event in the country’s culinary calendar, is celebrating its 12th anniversary this Saturday at Pleasant Villa Gardens in Mt Pleasant, the very venue where it all began.

The expo, which started as a small gathering in 2012, has grown into a national sensation, drawing hundreds of visitors and featuring up to 50 exhibitors, including professional cake creatives and major national brands.

Farai Chakabuda, the founder and lead organiser said it all started as a small event in in her mother’s backyard in Mount Pleasant.

“I planned the event single-handedly from 2012 until 2020, when I brought in three amazing coordinators — Noster Muyango, Mufaro Chakabuda, and Josephine Magwende — to help take it to the next level,” she said.

From its humble beginnings with just 10 exhibitors and 110 attendees, the expo now boasts participation from big names like Gloria, National Foods, and Zimgold.

Themed, “The Evolution of The Zimbabwe Cake Expo”, this year’s event celebrates the remarkable growth of the cake industry in Zimbabwe.

“We now attract between 35 and 50 professional cake creatives, alongside five national brands and several event partners,” Chakabuda said. “The support from these brands has been instrumental in making this event a success.”

The expo features live cake-decorating demonstrations, competitions and opportunities for attendees to engage with industry experts.
