A 27-year-old man from Stakeng village in Beitbridge has been jailed for five years for attacking a 17-year-old boy who broke up a fight between him and another man.

Khulekahani Dube was arrested for hitting the teenager with a tyre lever causing near-fatal injuries in February this year.

He was convicted of attempted murder when he appeared before Beitbridge regional magistrate Ms Charity Maphosa on Thursday.

Ms Maphosa conditionally set aside two and half years for 5 years and Dube will serve an effective two and half years.

Prosecuting, Mr Willborught Muleya said on February 7, the accused arrived at the Malibeng Business Centre and was involved in a fight with the teenager’s friend over an unknown issue.

The fight later degenerated into a fist fight and the teenager restrained them. The teenager’s friend left while the complainant and Dube remained behind.

Later the complainant decided to leave for home and Dube followed him and hit him on the head with a tyre lever as punishment for stopping the fight.

Dube then disappeared from the scene. The complainant sustained three deep cuts on the head and was taken to the hospital by his uncle who later reported the matter to the police leading to Dube’s arrest.
