A 22-year-old man from Gulliver Compound in Bindura was sentenced to 15 years in jail for attempting to rape an 8-year-old girl who was sleeping.
Blessing Mutengedzanwa pleaded not guilty to the rape charges but was convicted by Bindura regional magistrate Mr Amos Mbobo.
The prosecutor, Mr Forget Nyapfani, told the court that the incident happened on October 2 at around 10 pm.
The court heard that the minor retired to bed together with her two siblings.
At around 10 pm, their grandfather noticed that the children’s bedroom door was open, and he went to check.
He saw Mutengedzanwa lying behind his eight-year-old granddaughter who was fast asleep. Mutengedzanwa was doing some sexual movements.
The minor’s grandfather alerted others. They noticed that Mutengedzanwa had lowered his trousers to knee level.
When confronted, Mutengedzanwa pulled up his trousers and asked for forgiveness.
