A 43-year-old man from Piki village under Chief Zimunya on the outskirts of Mutare has been sentenced to five months in jail for assault and theft.
Never Mhovha appeared before Mutare Magistrate Mrs Ivy Musavengana, facing charges of contravening Section 89(1)(a) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act (Chapter 9:23).
Mrs Musavengana sentenced Mhovha to five months in jail, suspending three months on condition he does not commit a similar offence within the next five years.
The remaining two months were commuted to 105 hours of community service at Mt Dangare Primary School.
Prosecutor Sandra Mlambo outlined that Mhovha is an ex-husband to Mildred Muchineuta.
She said on May 13, 2025, around 10pm, Muchineuta was asleep at her home when Mhovha arrived and broke the main door to gain entry.
He proceeded to assault her with a stick, accusing her of seeing other men.
“Muchineuta managed to escape and sought refuge at her neighbour’s place. She returned home the following day and discovered that her money, amounting to US$80, which she kept in her jacket, was missing. The complainant sustained some bruises due to the assault,” she said.
