A 39-YEAR-OLD man from Hwange has been sentenced to 17 years imprisonment for raping a four-year-old toddler.

The incident happened on 16 September 2024, when the offender asked to be accompanied by the neighbour’s child on his way to the shops.

According to a statement from the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) on their X handle, the offender diverted his route into the bushes where he raped the minor, and later took her back to her home.

The matter was reported to the Hwange police station, resulting in the offender being arrested and taken to court.

“The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) is appealing to all parents and guardians to exercise extreme caution when entrusting the custody and care of their children to others, including relatives, family friends, and neighbours.

“This urgent call comes as the NPAZ continues to prosecute a significant number of cases where children have been sexually abused by individuals known to them or with whom they have a familial relationship,” reads the statement.
