A 28-year-old Nkayi man has been sentenced to an effective 12 months in jail for having sex with his 13-year-old cousin.
The man of Dobani Village in Nkayi was convicted on his own plea of guilty to a charge of having sex with a minor by Nkayi magistrate Mr Ndumo Masuku.
He was sentenced to 18 months of which six months were conditionally suspended for five years.
The court was told that sometime last year, the man proposed love to his cousin and she consented.
On 12 March, the girl was sent by her mother to the shops to collect some change.
The court was told that on her way back home, the girl met her cousin and he asked her to accompany him to his home and she complied.
On arrival, the two entered the man’s bedroom hut and he enticed the girl to sleep over during, which they had sex.
The matter came to light the following day when the girl’s parents were alerted by a local village head after spotting the girl.
A report was made to the police leading to the man’s arrest.
