TRUSTING a complete stranger landed a 19 year old Chimanimani mother in trouble when her four months old daughter was kidnapped.
Tendai Mucheye (39) and Evelyn Mukwanda boarded the same commuter omnibus from Mutambara Mission where the latter had been discharged from hospital on December 5. The two created a relationship in the commuter omnibus and Mucheye left her child with Mukwanda who ran away with the child.
Manicaland Province Police Spokesperson assistant inspector Luxson Chananda confirmed the incident.
“It is alleged that on December 5, Mucheye and Mukwanda boarded the same commuter bus from Mutambara to Nedziwa and it is at Nedziwa where Mukwanda wanted to withdraw money from Ecocash that she left her daughter with Mucheye.
“She left the child and all her belongs with him rushing to a nearby Ecocash outlet. When she returned she found the man gone with the baby but he had left everything else. A police report was made.” said Assistant inspector Chananda
Mucheye was later found in a bus that was going to Mutare with the baby at Matsororo Bridge and he was arrested.
The reasons as to why he had kidnapped the baby were not established.
Assistant Inspector Chananda said: “It is the old habits of trusting strangers that mothers should refrain from. Mothers should not trust anyone with their babies because people have different intentions.”
