A 19-YEAR-OLD worker of Bina Mine in Gwanda was yesterday morning found dead after being allegedly stabbed on the back by unknown assailants while coming from a beer binge at a local nightclub.
Relatives and friends identified the victim as Washington Mukanya. When Sunday News arrived at the scene, his body had not been removed. One of his friends Lungisani Sibanda told Sunday News that he and Mukanya were drinking until late at Limelight Night Club before they were chucked out after Mukanya had a fight with a man whom he referred to as Vodloza.
He said that Mukanya then proceeded to Njanji Night Club. Mukanya’s father, Kudakwashe Mukwanya (56) who was at the scene expressed disappointment and said that he had warned his son of his bad behaviour and he had even told him that he will die if he continued to live a confrontational life.
“Washington left home at around 1pm, when I asked him where he was going he told me that he was going to town to collect his work tools. I knew that his behaviour was going to lead him to death someday. Her mother and I had tried to convince him several times to change his behaviour but he did not listen. I had wished him to go to school and be a successful person,” said the father.
The local councillor, Johane Ncube expressed concern over the incident and noted that it was worrying that similar incidents have been reported in the area.
Matabeleland South Police spokesman Inspector Philisani Ndebele could not comment as he said he was not in Gwanda.
