AN 18-year-old Esigodini man allegedly fatally stabbed his 19-year-old friend with a knife for accidentally spilling his beer during a drinking spree.
Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson Inspector Philani Ndebele said Nqobani Khumalo, who is in police custody, stabbed Mthulisi Ncube on Sunday at around 3AM at Mawabeni Nightclub.
“I can confirm a murder incident which occurred at Mawabeni Nightclub where Nqobani Khumalo allegedly stabbed Mthulisi Ncube. The two men were drinking beer when Ncube accidentally spilt his friend’s beer. This didn’t go down well with Khumalo and a misunderstanding arose between them. Khumalo then retrieved a knife and stabbed Ncube in the chest,” he said.
“Ncube was rushed to Esigodini District Hospital where he died a few hours later. Khumalo fled from the incident after committing the offence but he was later arrested. He is under police custody and is expected to appear in court facing murder charges.”
Insp Ndebele bemoaned the level of violence which existed among teenagers and youths especially at drinking spots.
He appealed to parents to reprimand youngsters against engaging in criminal activities.
“It is concerning that a life was lost over such a petty issue and this whole incident could have been avoided in the first place. The level of crime among youngsters is high and we urge parents and community members to strongly reprimand such behaviour,” Insp Ndebele said.
