A 37-year-old man from Waterfalls lost his vehicle on Sunday after an agreement was reached following a road accident.
Police say Simbarashe Mawodze accidentally reversed into another motorist’s silver Toyota Fortuner, causing a crash.
Two men were in the Fortuner, and the parties agreed that Mawodze would repair the other motorist’s vehicle.
The two then drove to Patel Shopping Centre, where Mawodze was going to collect US$50 to pay for the damages.
Upon arrival, both vehicles parked at the shopping centre.
Mawodze told the men that he was going inside to collect the money, and they demanded that he leave the car keys with them as a guarantee that he would return.
He agreed.
Mawodze returned after about five minutes and discovered that the two men had driven away his motor vehicle.
Police also report that Mawodze’s driver’s licence, passport, and two mobile phones—a Samsung A23 and a Samsung Note 10 Plus—were stolen.
Harare Provincial Police spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza confirmed the case and said investigations are underway.
“Police are investigating a theft of a motor vehicle in Waterfalls. The victim was involved in an accident with the suspect. Total value stolen is US$6,000,” said Inspector Chakanza.
