A MAN from Magwegwe suburb in Bulawayo lost an eye after his friend struck him with an empty soft drink bottle in a fight over a television remote control.

Sikhumbuzo Jiyane, 36, allegedly struck Evidence Mabetha, 31, of the same suburb after a struggle to retain the gadget. The court heard that Mabetha is admitted to the United Bulawayo Hospitals.

“I begged him to give me the remote control so that I could change channels since I wanted to see the soccer results. He then assaulted me using a Coca-Cola bottle once on my left eye,” said Mabetha in a statement.

Jiyane appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Themba Chimiso facing an assault charge.

He pleaded not guilty and the magistrate remanded him in custody.

Prosecuting, Lilo Kagunde told the court that on April 21 at around 3.30PM, Jiyane assaulted Mabetha after a misunderstanding over a remote control.

“The accused person assaulted Mabetha with an empty Coca-Cola bottle on the left eye and the complainant sustained a ruptured eye. The complainant’s eye bled heavily and is swollen,” said Kagunde.

“He was admitted to UBH on April 21 and is still not fit to come and testify.”
