A DARING car thief struck, as a couple battled to open the gate of their house, and drove off with a Toyota Hilux GD6 in Harare on Sunday afternoon.

A child, who was in the car when the thief struck, was later dumped by the roadside.

Harare Provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Luckmore Chakanza, said:

“Police are appealing for information to locate a stolen bronze Toyota Hilux GD6 with registration number AGN 1681.

“Edmore Bhunu (32) had parked his vehicle at his residence’s gate, while waiting for his wife to open it,” he said.

“Despite Bhunu hooting, his wife’s attempt to open the gate using a remote control, was unsuccessful.

“She then tried to open it manually, but her efforts also proved fruitless.

“Bhunu decided to assist his wife, disembarking from the car and placing their child on the front passenger seat.

“Together, they managed to open the gate.

“In the midst of this process, an unidentified male suddenly appeared, swiftly entered the car and reversed it at high speed, heading towards Warbury Road,” he said.

Insp Chakanza added:

“As Bhunu chased after the car, desperately shouting for help, the (car thief) briefly stopped and left the child by the roadside before speeding away along Warbury Road towards Harare Drive.

“In his pursuit, Bhunu stumbled and fell, injuring his left arm, which allowed the (car thief) to escape.”

He said Bhunu also lost cash and a cellphone which were in the car.

“The incident not only resulted in the loss of the valuable GD6 car but also $1 300 cash that was on the seat and a Samsung S24 cellphone,” said Inspr Chakanza.

“The police are advising anyone who spots the stolen car or possesses any information related to the incident to contact Mabelreign Police Station at (0242) 305651, Harare Operations at (0242) 748836 or the nearest police station.

“Drivers should be cautious and alert to the modus operandi employed by these robbers, they specifically target individuals at their gates knowing that they would need to exit their vehicles to open the gates.”
