A married man from Bulawayo went into a rage, assaulted and killed his girlfriend after she refused to answer a call from an unknown number.
Moses Remayi recently appeared before Bulawayo High Court judge Justice Evangelista Kabasa facing a murder charge.
He pleaded not guilty but was found guilty after a full trial. He was sentenced to an effective 18-year jail sentence. In his defence, Remayi claimed that his girlfriend’s reaction to an anonymous call had angered him.
“I was having a conversation with my girlfriend when her phone rang. I asked her who it was, and she claimed it was her brother, David Dlamini. She refused to answer and threw her phone on the floor.
“I dialled the number using my phone and a man answered. This made me angry, as I suspected she was cheating on me,” said Remayi.
He stated that this led to an argument between them.
“We started fighting and the deceased bit my hand and arm. She hit her head on the toilet door and the wall. When we went outside, I hit the deceased with a steel chair. She fell face down and injured her forehead, but I had no intention of killing her,” he said.
However, the court heard that on October 16, 2022, around 7pm, Remayi and the now-deceased had a disagreement that escalated into violence.
A co-tenant, Evidence Denhere, heard screams coming from the victim’s room and knocked on the door to intervene. She went to the window and pleaded with Remayi to stop assaulting the victim.
But he continued indicating that no one could stop him as he had locked the door.
Denhere sought help from other neighbours but to no avail. Remayi continued to assault the victim with his feet, fists and an iron bar for nearly an hour.
After a while, Remayi opened the door and left the victim outside. She was half-naked and bleeding profusely. One of the neighbours, Cynthia Chaleka, saw the victim, took a blanket from her house and covered her.
The victim was taken to the hospital for medical examination and died several days later as a result of the assault.
The matter was reported to the police and investigations led to the culprit’s arrest and the recovery of the iron bar. — B-Metro

Barren aunt sets up 10-year-old niece for rape
A barren woman from Binga attempted to save her marriage by ‘pimping’ her sister’s 10-year-old daughter to her husband, which led to the man allegedly raping the child on several occasions.
The woman, who is facing charges of facilitating rape, recently appeared before Binga magistrate Victor Mpofu.
Her husband, who is facing rape charges, had gone into hiding and was yet to be arrested.
The woman was remanded in custody. She is expected to appear before a regional magistrate at Hwange Magistrates’ Court for the start of her trial later this month.
Allegations against the 49-year-old woman are that sometime in 2018, she took her sister’s 10-year-old daughter to her marital home in Gwanda.
The accused promised the child’s mother that she would pay for her schooling. In October 2018, the woman left her husband and her sister’s daughter staying in the same room and went to Binga for personal business.
The complainant never went to school.
Afterward, she questioned her aunt’s husband, who revealed that his wife had married her off to him so that she would bear children for him since her aunt was barren.
The man allegedly sexually assaulted her multiple times from early October 2018 until the end of November of the same year.
When the victim’s aunt returned at the end of November, her husband continued to sexually assault the child at night, even in her presence.
The court heard that after each sexual encounter, the man would give the minor a red concoction to drink. At times, the man would threaten to kill her if she refused to have sex with him.
The complainant made several attempts to flee but was caught and beaten.
Eventually, the girl managed to escape and travelled to Binga, where upon arrival she informed her parents, who allegedly ignored the matter.
The girl then reported the ordeal to the police, leading to her aunt’s arrest. — Bulawayo Bureau
