A SOUTHLEA Park man allegedly raped his teenage maid and was later recorded trying to convince her to keep the crime to herself.

Vengai Makawa was not asked to plead when he appeared in court charged with rape.

Prosecutor Tendai Tapi alleged that on March 29, Makawa’s wife left for work and left him with the 19-year-old maid and his son, who is aged three.

At around 7am, the maid went into Makawa’s bedroom to change the toddler’s diaper and went on to make Makawa’s bed.

As she was going out of the bedroom she bumped into Makawa at the door and he pushed her back into the bedroom. She resisted but Makawa overpowered her and she fell on the bed. He went on to rape her without protection.

Soon after, Makawa left the house and came back with some morning-after-pills and ordered the maid to take them to prevent pregnancy.

He allegedly told her that if she didn’t take the tablets it would be her own fault. The matter came to light the following day when the teenager told her friend about the incident and she was escorted to a nearby pharmacy to seek help.

She was advised to report the matter to the police.

Later that day, she called Makawa advising him that she was leaving his house and going to her relative’s house in Ivory Park, Waterfalls

Makawa persuaded her not go and not to tell anyone.

The maid recorded the conversation. Upon arrival at her relative’s house, the maid was escorted to report the matter to the police and she was referred to the hospital for medical examinations.

A medical report was obtained.
