Lovemore Chazingwa in JOTSHOLO
CECIL John Rhodes’ grand plan was to conquer the African continent from Cape To Cairo.
Of course, he didn’t succeed in this quest.
Now, an American man is on a mission to WALK from Cape to Cairo.
Eddie Bond, 43, simply loves adventure.
He has already covered the South African leg of his marathon walk and slipped into Zimbabwe recently.
He says it has always been his mission to write his own piece of history through an odyssey to explore Africa from the south to the north of the continent.
H-Metro hooked up with him at Cross Jotsholo Business Centre as he prepared for lunch.
He settled for a restaurant facing Metro Bar, at the centre of the growth point.
Eddie then opened up on his mission.
“I thought about this some five years ago. Then I was wondering on how I’m gonna start, what would be required and stuff.
“I drew a line-up of places to go to and the countries to visit.
“I started off on this journey in September last year on the southern tip of Africa, Cape Town and I intend to reach Cairo in Egypt.
“Every day is different in terms of planning and activity.
I do one place at a time, connect with people, some days.
“Some days you go without meeting people as some towns are far apart.
“When you connect with them (communities), they’re helpful with food, drinks and share experiences, then there is the company they bring, it’s fun.”
He added:
“I normally travel during the whole day with my luggage.
“At night, I sleep in my camping tent as it’s very rare for me to book into hotels and lodges.
“We may be accommodated in communities with which we interact, when lucky, that is.”
Bond points out to some of the places he has visited.
“In Zimbabwe, I’ve been to Plumtree, walked to Bulawayo then we are going to Victoria Falls.
“I will spend one-and-half weeks in Vic Falls.
“From there I’m walking to Kasane in Botswana. I wanna see Kasane, then head to Zambia, Tanzania, Kenya Ethiopia, Sudan, that route towards Egypt.”
The jovial character feels happy under the Zimbabwean sun.
“Wanna say thank you for the hospitality, all you locals here. I feel safe, it’s great here in Zimbabwe.”
He says his family is supportive of this adventure.
Bond said he is from a family of adventurers.
He connects with family on social media platforms.
He has no intention to marry and prefers to stay single.
