WHAT a friend!

On the eve of his friendas wedding day, Mandla Fuyane (40) vanished with $650 meant to buy a beast that guests would feast on. As such, the wedding of Leonard Bhebhe and his longtime sweetheart was called off indefinitely.

Fuyane of 29 Matsitsi Road, Mambo Suburb in Gweru appeared before Gweru Magistrate Judith Taruvinga on Friday facing one count of theft.

Taruvinga sentenced him to three months in prison wholly suspended on condition he restitutes the complainant his $650 forthwith, failure to which Fuyane would be imprisoned until Bhebhe receives his money in full.

In passing the sentence, Taruvinga considered the fact that Fuyane was an unemployed first offender with seven minor dependents who attend school.

a?You are found guilty of theft and sentenced to three months in prison which are wholly suspended on condition you restitute the complainantas money henceforth, failure to which you will be imprisoned until you pay him back,a? said Taruvinga.

The agreed facts are that on June 13 last year, Fuyane took $650 cash from Bhebhe for the purpose of buying a beast that was to be slaughtered at the latteras wedding.

The wedding was scheduled for August 2016.

The court heard that Fuyane converted the money to his own personal use.

After Fuyane failed to provide the beast, Bhebhe made a report to the police, leading to his arrest. .
