A 43-year-old Bulawayo man who suffered a devastating neck injury in a road traffic accident in 2023, which left him wheelchair-bound, is seeking financial support to undergo life-changing corrective surgery in India.
Mr Eric Nyoni said the accident which changed his life occurred on October 5, 2023 and needs US$44 000 for surgery.
He said he was rushed to Avenues Clinic in Harare, where he had his first neck surgery.
“…I had a second one a month later. At that time, I had no mobility at all and started physiotherapy in Harare. I then gained a bit of mobility in my upper body. I then moved back to Bulawayo and continued with physiotherapy,” said Mr Nyoni.
He said his condition needs advanced medical equipment, which is found in India and needs to undergo corrective surgery.
Mr Tutani Makwenzi, who represents a group of institutions and individuals in fundraising for the surgery, said they are making all possible efforts to to ensure that Mr Nyoni undergos surgery.
“We had had different people contributing towards the fund and we have also been holding fundraising events. We had two brothers who took part in the Comrades Marathon held in South Africa last week and managed to raise some funds as well,” said Mr Makwenzi.
He said on Saturday, they are planning on hosting a family fun day at Busters Sports Club in Bulawayo, which will be coupled with a sponsored walk and a run aimed at raising funds towards Mr Nyoni’s surgery.
“We will also be holding a soccer tournament, and all these events are being done to raise funds for this cause. All these are to try to get him to India. Every cent we raise will go towards Eric so that we manage to get him to India,” Mr Makwenzi said.
