A CHINHOYI family has been rocked by a dark secret after an 18-year-old man was convicted of having sex with his sister, a 16-year-old minor.
The disturbing case only came to light after tragedy struck and the girl almost died after suffering a miscarriage.
Both the offender and victim cannot be named for ethical reasons.
The Chinhoyi Magistrates’ Court heard that the teenager repeatedly had sexual intercourse with his younger sister at their rural home in Madhuveko Village, Zvimba.
The court convicted the offender and slapped him with a 12 month jail sentence. Four months were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour, while the remaining eight months were suspended on condition that he performs 280 hours of community service.
According to court facts, the shocking abuse happened on an unknown date in May 2025. The girl was preparing for school when her brother allegedly entered her room, crept up behind her and caressed her. What followed was sexual intercourse.
The siblings went on to have sex several more times on different occasions, with the underage girl eventually falling pregnant.
The incestuous affair only came into the open when the victim became seriously ill. She was rushed to hospital where doctors discovered she had suffered a miscarriage, raising red flags that triggered investigations.
Police moved in and arrested the brother, leading to his appearance before the courts and eventual conviction.
Prosecutors said the matter was a painful reminder that child abuse does not always come from strangers, neighbours or outsiders.
“This case highlights the importance of monitoring children, even siblings within the same household, as abuse can happen between siblings,” read part of the prosecution’s statement.
Authorities urged parents and guardians to stay vigilant, talk openly with children and take warning signs seriously, no matter how uncomfortable the truth may be.
The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) reiterated its call to protect minors and break the silence around abuse within families.
