The man, Thando Ndlovu, allegedly hanged himself near his home after realising that the fire had destroyed all the property. His body was found two days later.
Officer commanding Lupane police district Chief Superintendent Johannes Govo confirmed the incident yesterday. He said it happened under Chief Gampu Sithole.
“The incident occurred between 2 and 5 September and involved a father, Philisani Ndlovu and his 19-year-old son. The two had a misunderstanding about daily chores, which angered Thando Ndlovu.
“After some time his father went to visit a neighbour leaving Thando at the home and he immediately set his parents’ bedroom alight. The fire destroyed all the property in the house and the family failed to put it out,” said Chief Supt Govo.
He said Thando fled from the home and went into the bush after seeing that the fire had destroyed all the property.
“His parents tried to locate him and they later decided to make a report at Tsholotsho Police Station the following day. Police launched a manhunt for Thando and his body was found hanging from a tree after two days,” said Chief Supt Govo.
He said police attended the scene and no foul play was suspected.
“We would like to remind families that they should consult third parties whenever they have misunderstandings. They can always consult traditional leaders or seek help from the Police Victim Friendly Unit so that they solve their disputes amicably,” said Chief Supt Govo.
