A man shocked Word Of Life church members in the Kelvin North area in Bulawayo when he allegedly stole from the church.

Jameson Murenga allegedly stole three carpets, a table cloth and a mop from the house of the Lord.

The matter was later discovered by a church member. Murenga was implicated in the crime after a church member tipped off the police that she saw a man fitting Murengaas description leaving the church with the stolen property.

The accused appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Tancy Dube.

In his defence, Murenga said that the property belonged to his aunt who is based in South Africa and that his accusers from Word of Life were trying to tarnish his image.A The magistrate postponed the case to 18 September.

However, Murenga sang a different tune from what he initially said in court when contacted by B-Metro.

a?I did not steal anything from the church. The people that were cleaning the church left the stuff outside and I assumed it was no longer in use,a? he said.

a?The table cloth was on the washing line and my grandmother who had visited me from my rural home was not aware that it did not belong to me. She took the table cloth and put it in my house,a? he added. .
