OVER-INDULGENCE in an illicit beer, popularly known in street lingo as kozodo, last Friday ended tragically after a Nyanyadzi man (45) drowned while trying to cross a flooded river.
Isaac Maphosa’s body was found floating in Nyanyadzi River after he attempted to cross the flooded river while under the influence of the illicit beer which has become popular in Nyanyadzi and Chipinge areas. Police confirmed the incident which happened in Nenhohwe Village, in Chief Mutambara’s area.
“Isaac Maposa was last seen by his cousin brother, James Chinyimo drinking the illicit brew in the company of his friends. After consuming one too many, Maposa left intending to go home. Nobody checked on him since he stayed alone.
“A villager, Benjamin Chikomo went to Nyanyadzi River the following day and saw Maposa’s body floating in the river. He reported the matter to the police who attended the scene and retrieved it,” said Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Luxson Chananda.
Meanwhile, in an ugly case of domestic violence, a Chipinge woman decided to take her life by consuming a pesticide after her hubby refused to give her money for goodies before he left for South Africa on New Year’s Day.
The deceased, Yvonne Mapaike (21) and her hubby, Thulani Mtetwa, had a heated argument after the latter announced that he was leaving for South Africa and had no money to give Mapaike.
Police confirmed the incident that took place in Dambamuromo Village in Chief Musikavanhu’s area.
“Mapaike did not fathom her husband’s refusal to give her money before leaving for South Africa. She consumed an unknown pesticide before telling her friend, Felistas Maparadze. Mapaike told Mapardze that she had decided to commit suicide over her husband’s decision to leave her penniless. She was rushed to Chibuwe Clinic where she died upon arrival,” said Insp Chananda.
