A 91-YEAR-OLD Bulilima man who was being terrorised by his abusive son collapsed and died after seeing him again. Bernard Mqegula Ndlovu was hospitalised at Plumtree District Hospital for a month after his 64-year-old abusive son, Gerald Ndlovu, attempted to kill him by hanging. Ndlovu went to the extent of applying for a peace order against his son while in hospital but was discharged before the matter could be heard.
He resisted going home, at Plot 192 in Silima area, as he did not want to see his son but was forced to return home after he was discharged from hospital. On seeing Gerald, he collapsed and died.
The late Ndlovu’s son, Mandla Maphosa, yesterday said his father had always been afraid that Gerald, who always terrorised him, would one day kill him.
“My father was discharged last week on July 11 but was resisting as he did not want to return home. He was insisting on remaining at the hospital until Gerald was behind bars,” Maphosa said.
He said four days after his discharge from hospital, Gerald came to his house.
“On seeing him my father just collapsed and died,” said Maphosa.
On December 25 last year, Gerald tied a rope around the late Ndlovu’s neck and dragged him around the house in protest over food.
He then attempted to hang him but after discovering that there was nowhere to tie the rope to on the ceiling, he released him and left him unconscious.
Gerald was sentenced to three months imprisonment for committing the offence.
Upon his release, Gerald stormed his father’s house and threatened to kill him saying he wanted to take ownership of his property.
He tied a red cloth at his father’s gate and swore to end his life and the old man collapsed and was bedridden for more than a month.
Ndlovu was buried at his homestead on Thursday.
